Hope you enjoy it.  Please provide sage commentary afterwards!

I went for "good first effort".

Good points.
The fact that Roberts is back !!!
The music, although not always what you'd expect for a Star Trek show was selected and used very well.

Nitpicks.
Overuse of the laws of aquisition.  I thought HF started to do this a bit much too, glad they pared that back a bit.  Whilst a couple are always welcome, at one point they were almost talking in code.

General

I'm not sure what I expected but did not expect to jump straight into a court martial.  The last we saw him of course he was "dead" but certainly not captured. I also didn't expect the "spy for starfleet" angle.  I guess it can work but wouldn't want it to turn into a version of S31.

I guess there was always that "Starfleet knows what he's up to" angle which this formalises.  Maybe they *think* they have him under control but don't really ?  That's what I'm thinking at the moment especially since the admiral wants his son along to keep an eye on him.

I tend not to be a good listener so will have another listen, I usually pick up things I missed the first time round.

No, I used it once, but when the mood changed and we move into the shady world the crew is involved in, the traditional trek music is dumped in favor of more appropriate music.

Shouldn't that be "yes I used it once" ?

Anyway, I know what you mean and that sounds like a good choice.  I wasn't aware of that specific change which is why I'll have to listen again to get the nuances.

The attitude of the series is going to be "this ain't your daddy's Trek."  As such, we'll be using very little, if any, traditional Trek faire.

Taken out of context without the second line, meant nothing by it besides showing I'm a pain...

Don't worry about it, Hud.  It's not that big a deal.  I'm just happy you took the time to listen and post!

I liked it - it shows great promise. Just about ever VA had an interesting voice but your Ferrengi and Admiral were outstanding! The storyline was understandable because I had a passing knowledge of the background (still haven't watched the HF episode yet though) but I wonder if a new listener would get as much out of it because of the opening scene being a Court Martial of unexplained crimes? Of course this could work to your advantage as a teaser giving the character "a past" - and the curious listener who wanted to know the captain's background can go watch the HF ep. easily enough.

The only other major nitpick is the firefight - hard to visualise in audio, and hand-phasers in the bar fight sound much the same as the ship phasers in orbit. Maybe it goes against your philosophy of "not-your-Daddy's-Trek" but there are stereotypical sound-effects that would make the listener know instantly that they were on the bridge just as surely as the broken glass lets them know that they are in a bar.

Cheers

There's a lot I could say, but pretty much all of it has been said already.  I was suspicious of the premise, but this first episode shows a lot of writing and production talent; I'll be bookmarking this page for future reference.

So I'll just say that I thought the music choices were excellent.  Cheesy

-James

Postscript: As someone who has not seen the H.F. episode that spawned this, I can say that it creates a certain aura of mystery around the central characters.  It kept me listening, because I was trying to figure out what the backstory was.  That said, I'd expect most of your listeners will be hardcore H.F. fans, so don't listen to me.

Does anyone know where I can get a copy of this episode?  The page tells me there's some server error.
